comments: Klaus, What a great website! Congratulations on putting together something really useful for beginners and the more advanced alike. Your style is very relaxed and personal while it is obvious that you are very well-informed and knowledgeable about the sport. I've been looking for a comprehensive site like this, and so far, yours is by far the best I've seen. I've dabbled in weightlifting on and off now for years, and it never seems to get me anywhere. I'm very tall and thin -- not the ideal body type for maximum results, and I've always had problems putting on weight. I'm going to try your routines, supplements, suggestions, etc. for the next year and see where it gets me. I've not done a thing, physically, for about the past two years and am very out of shape, so I've got to start out easy. I'm 6'3" and weigh 170. If I could just put on 10 pounds of muscle over the next year, I'd be thrilled. Thanks for all the helpful and insightful information. Your methods have obviously worked for you -- You look great, so you must know what your talking about! Wish me luck. Jim Sanderson

comments: I was introduced to your page by a co-worker who trains. I was motivated about a little over a year ago to lose weight, but now....that I have gained the 60 pounds that I lost back, I'm truly depressed again. Your site is absolutely fabulous and I think that it is the best that I've ever seen and it's very informative. You have done such a great job on it and you deserve a big kiss for your efforts....well at least a big handshake...lol One thing that I've heard other women say is that "women are allowed to have more fat than men because we're different".....well I've used that excuse myself to myself long enough and would really like to get the motivation from somewhere....(I don't know where..but) in order to lose my weight again. I really need to lose about 100 pounds. I know you probably didn't need to hear all of this, but I felt like sharing....(smile). Keep up the excellent work that you're doing....You're Great!

I just want you to know that I throughly enjoy your insight and recommendations. It seemed to be a hopeless desire of mine to produce large muscle gains but thanks to the new developements in natural supplements and people like you, I am seing fantastic results. I've gone from 122 lbs to 132 lbs in my first 10 days! I am so motivated that I signed a 2 year contract with a local gym. I appreciate your information so much! I'm taking only 1/2 of what you recommend for big gains, but I'm doing as much as I can affford. Have you thought about writing a book? You should. :-)

It would be nice to finally meet someone who could help me a little along the way. But your page really answered alot of questions for me. Thanks for your help. Michelle

comments: Found you in yahoo. I was just looking for articles on weightlifting. I realize each person should find a routine which works for them, however, I have found one that some may wish to try. I am 54 years old and find that if I workout every day my body is in constant pain. My workout consist of 3 days a week. I do extreme heavy weight with partial movement. Three to four inch movement to lock out. Monday, upper body (chest & back), Tuesday, arms (bis & tris),and Wednesday I do Legs. One week I do quads and calves, the next week hamstrings and calves. For me, the best part, is the four days off. My body has a chance to fully recover, I don't hurt, I feel 100% ready to exercise. I finally am beginning to see growth and defition, and my strength is continuously increasing. I'm not saying this is the ultimate workout routine, however, it works extremely well for me and may be a routine that some of your readers would like to try. Thank You.

I have been tring to bulk up and shed fat for four years now and have been slightly succesful I always had to rely on other people advice and hoped they knew what they were talking about and now thanks to you I know "How" and "Why" some methods work and others don't. I especially liked your sections on diet because others only tell you to trust thier diet, I'v had a very solid workout plan but because I did'nt know that your gains are in the diet I've waisted so much effort but now I know. comments: Firstly, I found the site at about.com. Secondly, what an excellent site! I'm recovering from cracking my sternum playing rugby, and so have taken up weight lifting to regain the muscle bulk I lost whilst recuperating for two months. I have to say, for advice on this, diet training schedules and other fitness matters, I haven't found a site as comprhensive as this on the web. And you are willing to do this for free! Outstanding behaviour, for which you should be commended. Your training advice, which might I add, is always sensible and useful, has helped me along in constructing a program to suit my needs. In the past month, I have put on 7lbs in muscle bulk, whilst losing a fair deal of the fat acquired. I am however, having a damn hard time getting the last bit off. I wouldn't mind seeing my abs again! Anyway, back to the grindstone. If all else fails, there's always liposuction (joke).

I am now 10 months in the gym and never lost the love for weight training, i'm proud of myself but, i also in a way think in those 10 months i could have accomplished more. comments: Great site. It's well laid out, easy to use, and informative (maybe even a little TOO informative, but that's not possible). It's good to know that somebody else payed attention in Anatomy class! I have 2 questions. 1. What program (if any) do you use for your site? 2. What about diet pop? What are the effects of it on the whole picture you've painted for me? Please let me know at my email address if you have the time. Anyway, I found you on the Yahoo search engine. About myself, I'm 6'1 and I weigh about 235. Last year at this time I was about 275. I lost it just by watching what I ate (with a 1 month stint on the Atkins diet - After that all meat was nasty to me for a loooooong time) and lifting. I'm still quite a bit overweight, and I was surfing for a good site that might give me an idea on some new ways to attack my ample self. Thanks for the hard work on the site, and any correspondence on my 2 questions would be appreciated. --JD

comments: Well, when I typed Rubba at google.com I found your homepage inbetween some weird latex sex pages... Gruss Nicole

Have been here all my life. Some of the things we do are: hunting, fishing, boating and amoung other every day things. I love to walk and eat, but eating the wrong things obviously. My life doesn't have the fast pace of the south in it and no up to date movies. However we get by, with the bear min. I work as a Radio Operator and love my job, the people I work with are great and funny, it is a joy to go to work every day. Any ways, I need to know how to lose the 70 odd lbs I have to lose in order to feel better about myself, and not feel so FAT. Colleen

comments: I came to this page originally because my roommate, who is a bodybuilder put a shortcut to it on my computer. At first I expected just another big muscle, manly, hype webpage. I got bored one day and decided to actually read a little bit of the page. Four hours later I had to pull myself away from the computer to sleep. I can't believe the wealth of knowledge I have found. I've spent so much time reading and I haven't even come close to reading the whole page. Between the information actually contained in this webpage and the references to other great pages, this is one of the best exercise and nutrition information source I have seen in my LIFE. It is the perfect balance of breadth, depth and brevity. Thank you SO much for providing this resource to the public. As an engineering professional and webmaster, I know how much time and energy it takes to maintain a useful webpage outside your professional focus. Please, please continue to update the information here. I will continue to use it as I develope my personal exersize and nutrition program.

I am consuming about 200 grams of protein and carbs each day in six meals. I started the program at 230lbs and a 30% body fat. I use his workout plan (6 days with 3 weights & 3 aerobic). I am currently at 219lb and 25% body fat. Would it help burn more fat if I did about 10-15 minutes of aerobics (stairclimb) after weight lifting?

comments: Hi. Great website. You seem very knowledgeable about working out and proper nutrition. I have a question though. I have been working out for 11 straight weeks now and I am thinking about my workout strategy and goals. Here's what I have been doing: Mondays, Chest and Back; Tuesdays, Shoulder's and Legs; Wednesdays, Biceps/Triceps/Abs and Thursday is day off. The cycle repeats on Friday. I have always been a skinny guy and I really want to see muscle growth (not just getting cut). I have been supplementing my workouts with Twinlab Gainers Fuel 1000. I have been noticing some gains in my body, but I am wondering if I should do something different. What type of workout routine can you suggest that would be good for me, and isn't as time consuming as my current routine? Thank you in advance for your help.

comments: Found your site just browsing around. Only been internet connected for a week. I've been working out steady for 3 years now. I decided to quit smoking and wanted any weight gain as a result of that to be in the form of muscle, not fat. So far so good, I think I'm maintaining a 11-13% body fat while putting on 15 or so more pounds in weight. My problem is now my cholesteral level. I'm on a low fat, low cholesteral diet and I'm starting to drop weight. My concern is not to lose muscle or strenth as well. So, I'm exploring various sites trying to get a handle on a diet that works for both weight lifting and keeping the cholesteral level low.

comments: EXCELLENT SITE!!!!!!!!!! I am triing to go a step further in my workouts with supplementation. Your site is incredible with regard to giving me "just the facts" without triing to sell me something . Between you and Bill Phillips I think I have what I need. I started working out after rehab, I went off an overpass in a semi truck. I found myself missing my workouts. After rehab and six months of self training (stumbling around) I was still refered to as "wobblietrucker" so I hired a trainer and in four months I walked like a person. The handle stuck and rather than fight it I adopted it. I haven't read 'TIPS' yet but information should be formost. Trainers, your web, and Bill's guide are all great resorces. You might add a section on different supplyment manufactures. The good, the bad, and the ugly Thanks again! Rich

comments: hey I am to the point in the gym where just going from weight to weight is'nt cutting it. so i'm developing my program. 1st question is what is a good formula for determining the weight of the weight being lifted. I mean how do I know what weight to use to complete my set's right know I either finish the days workout and don't feel like I benifited from it like I should have, or I get to exausted and am unable to complete the workout for that day. I know a lot of it has to do with the percentage of your max in the specific area but what exactly do I need to figure. The 2nd question is I am already starting to see a real problem with my right side being significantly larger than my left side. I can't get the same pump with my left side as I can my right side and it seems to be holding me back. how can I fix this. Thanx ALEX

I would dare say that your site and Cyperpump.com has engrossed most of my attention. While Cyperpump has a great deal of useful - although intensely technical information, your site was also chalked full of useful information, in easy to navigate links. I starting my own site to document my struggle to lose body fat and gain significant muscle mass. So, I will point any interesting parties out there, this way. Thanks for creating a helpful and user friendly site. Earl Shearin

comments: I found site using search engine looking for good routines. I can't say how much I greatly appreciate this free info. You really seem to cover all the bases and aspects of lifting. As an intermediate, I need the kind of knowledge that will help me, not confuse me. Your site does just that (help me, of course). Only a great person is willing to sacrifice time and effort to the benefit of others. Amazing how some can be so generous with something that they, themselves, love so much. Can't thank you enough for sharing. I also look forward to progress via your education, and will most definately report anything I owe to you.

comments: I think that some of the stuff you have on your site about diets is absolute crap!! I know a lot about fitness and losing weight. Most of the foods you say to cut out are essential for a healthy diet. Whilst it is a bad thing to eat a lot of carbohydrates - these are essential for muscles. And as for aerobics not being enough to lose weight this is also crap. Any exercise is good, even if it is just a 20 min brisk walk. People starting a "healthy eating plan" (not diet) should start slowly and then build up on exercise. I can only hope that there are no desperate people out there taking your advice. You can at least suggest recipes for the food you reckon people can eat. As most people wouldn't be able to find a lot to do with the categories left. All in all I am very disappointed that somebody who obviously doesn't have a clue has built a website including tips on how people should lose weight!!!

I'm sorry you feel that way, but seeing as you are the first negative opinion in about 500, I'm afraid I have to disagree. As I've stated in my pages, there is no such thing as essential carbohydrates. This is not my opinion, but a scientific fact. There are essential fatty acids and essential amino acids, but no essential carbohydrates. The only organ that needs carbohydrates is the brain, and the body is smart enough to get the carbs it needs for this through gluconeogenesis.

Not only are carbohydrates not essential to survive, but you can also build muscle without carbohydrates. Sure you don't get a great pump, you may not have tons of energy in the gym, and you may not build muscle as quickly, but these diets are provided as a guideline for fat loss, not muscle building. In fact, if you would read these pages carefully, you'll notice I don't usually recommend extreme restriction of carbs, and I'm a huge advocate of carb rich post workout meals to replenish muscle glycogen, but I guess maybe you didn't read that far.

I don't recall ever saying that small amounts of, or low intensity exercise is not worth it. But I do believe if you pay no attention to diet and eat huge amounts of unhealthy food, exercise alone probably won't result in fat loss. How you find these two issues to be related is beyond me, perhaps it was just mindless ramblings. Of course any exercise is good, and if you choose to ignore diet, fine, at least you'll be doing your heart a favor, but don't expect to burn much fat.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the attitude I convey is precisely that: to start a healthy eating plan. Though I outline all sorts of 'extreme' diets, I don't believe they are sustainable, therefor not a long term solution. For the most part I talk about the various diets to explain how biochemistry and metabolism work so people can understand how the foods they choose affect their bodies. And I'm sure I didn't recommend people dive into training, but rather build up slowly.

My cooking skills pretty much suck, and sometimes I'll resort to eating 'recipes' that would make most people shudder. I don't list foods as absolutes, saying never eat this or that. Pretty much anything is fine in moderation. The foods I do list are more of a guideline as to which sources are your best bet for getting adequate amounts of protein (and admittedly this list sometimes seems restrictive, but that's the fault of nature, not mine), and avoiding copious amounts of carbohydrates (yes, yes, I know they help build muscle, but too many can also help dig an early grave).

All in all, I think you totally misunderstood the spirit of this website: to educate, not dictate. I don't want to tell people what to do and what to eat. I want them to understand how the body works so they make decisions for themselves, not take someone elses word for it. Sure I could provide an exact exercise routine and diet (with recipes), but everybodies different: different schedules, different likes and dislikes, allergies, goals, starting points, history, etc. I don't have the time to come up with the myriad of programs to satisfy everybodies needs, which is why I try to help them design their own programs. And if you don't like it, you don't have to read it.

There are no advertisments or promotions blinking in your face telling you the only way to succeed is by taking their supplement. Many of the mistakes I made when I first started weight training could have been avoided if I had known about this site. The new tips and advice I got of this site have helped me learn what the Hell I've been doing wrong for such a while, i.e. overtraining. I've told a few of my friends about this site that are currently making the mistakes I made, and I'm sure they will benefit from reading it. Thanks and keep up the good work. Cory

comments: great site. great work. learned a lot fr u. last december , under yur suggestion, i read lyle macdonald's review of bodyopus. very informative. finally got bodyopus fr 'netrition.com' . it was out of print and unavailable elsewhwere. after several months on opus, i was a bit dissapointed. maybe 1 pound fat loss per month, .... but strength lossage. tried lyle's tkd. much better for fat loss, ...but even more strength loss. then tried tarabjorn's 'abcde' thrust for a couple of cycles. again dissappointing. got fat with no strength increase on the bulking phase. diet phase was ok, but again strength lossage. after 9 months of cycled ketosis, i managed to loose 15 lbs , 2 inches. with about 5% strength loss. bf : maybe 17% to 11% ? six pack have appeared, but dissappears instantly by 2nd day of carb up. my conclusions: bodyopus - too much effort required to get into ketosis. (2 days) just for a 3 days of fat burning. i may have averaged 1/2 lb loss per cycle. but good buzz on w/o's post carbload. but no strength gain. abcde thrust - i found that 12 days of dieting was great for the waistline, but tremendous muscle lossage. tough to control appetite on the other 12 days. i was eating up to 8000 calories per day. i'm 160 lbs. tkd : worked great for a few weeks. thought it was the perfect system. but then ... appetite control problem. just one bite, and all hell breaks loose. just when i was about to give up on lo carbs, since i got fairly close to my objective, and go on to a moderate diet, read about protein power on yur site. great book. so again back to ketosis, not for fat loss , but health . however, as u suggested, post w/o carbs may be beneficial. but u also suggested, in one of yur eml responses, that muscle growth can occur without carbs. u also suggested mixing opus with protein power. 4 by 5 days , i believe. what is yur lat

My branch of the family emigrated from Sicily to Hammonton, New Jersey in the 1800s, where my grandfather Matteo ran a grocery store and later a large furniture store. Six sons (Russell, Lino, John, Frank, Joseph and Anthony) and one daughter Theresa, all of whom are deceased except Anthony who resides in Florida. Any of it familiar? Would love to explore family history with you. Jeanne

I started out pretty skinny but after three months of working my butt off i have noticed some gains but i am no were near satisfyed. I have hit a plateau and it really is buging meSo ive decided to give your routine a try. I was wondering why you left out trainning the triceps and the shoulders? ALL I want is to get MASS! then cut it up later, but im a hard gainer.
